On Friday October 27, a water main burst in Scarborough that severely impacted the Pizza Nova call center just before the start of the busy weekend. The water flooded a Bell Canada office and cable vaults, which crashed the telephone system for 9000 homes and businesses.

Bell technicians had to wait for the water to be shut off and then had to wait for the equipment to dry before they could begin repairs. Meanwhile Pizza Nova could not take orders through its regional call center.

Pizza Nova did implement an emergency communication’s plan for its customers. They aired radio advertisements that directed their customers to go to the Pizza Nova website and call the nearest store directly using the telephone numbers listed on the website. While this may be an acceptable method of ordering your pizza for some people there are many others that would not be able to either access the website, or would be “less than motivated” to go to the website and look up the nearest location and call the store. They would just call another pizza chain.

While a call center recovery is not as easy to implement as other business functions, it can be accomplished.

Domenic Primucci, a vice–president of the chain said, “The phones are our lifeline; they generate our business. Without the phones we don’t have any business”

What are the lifelines to your business? If your business was to experience a disaster during your busiest time of the day, week or month could you remain in business? Do you know what needs to be done to keep yourself operational? Developing a comprehensive Business Continuity Program can be completed for a reasonable cost and in a timely manner for many businesses. The cost of not having a program in-place can be the loss of your business.

To arrange a no-obligation meeting to discuss the components of a Business Continuity Program or to assist your company in the development and preparation of a comprehensive well-documented recovery plan or a series of checklists, please contact:
