Microsoft Announces end to Windows 98 / ME Support

Sometime around the middle of last month Microsoft quietly announced the official end of support for windows 98 and windows Millennium Edition (ME!).

Not surprising considering that Windows 98 is now more than 8 years old and ME! is almost 7.

But what about the portions of the small business and home based office community that still relies on older PC's running windows 98 or ME that haven't upgraded to windows XP yet? What will happen to their PC's?

Well the good news is that these older versions didn't just stop working all of a sudden, and there really isn't any reason they ever would, However, it is important to note that once Microsoft withdrawals support for a product a few key changes take place.

Firstly, Microsoft is no longer releasing security updates or patches for these older versions so as new threats to security emerge these older computers will be left completely unprotected from an operating system standpoint.

Secondly, Microsoft will not under any circumstances field phone calls about the products, they just don't want to hear from you at all, they don't even offer a fee based support anymore so if you're still running a Windows 98 or ME based PC don't go looking there for help.

Third and probably most important is that once Microsoft withdrawals support for a product line most software vendors do the same, meaning the next versions of your favourite anti-virus program, accounting package and even Microsoft office probably won't run on your older Windows 98 or ME computer.

So if you've got an older PC at home or at the office that's still running windows 98 or windows ME it's probably time to start thinking about upgrading that PC to Windows XP.

If you're not sure if it has the performance it will need for the newest versions of windows, I'd be more than happy to show you where to look so don't hesitate to call The Technology Coach at  (905) 366-8234 or Email The Technology Coach.
